World Immunisation Week: UAE official underlines importance of vaccines

On the occasion of World Immunisation Week, Abdulla bin Mohammed Al Hamed, Chairman of the Department of Health-Abu Dhabi, underlined the importance of vaccines in protecting communities against the COVID-19 pandemic. The UAE witnessed a splendid response against the pandemic in line with the constant support and directives of the wise leadership.

Addressing an event on the occasion, Al Hamed affirmed that the week highlights the significance of vaccines as a key element in preventing global pandemics and boosting healthcare systems.

Currently, the UAE is one of the world's most vaccinated nations with a low mortality rate since the pandemic crisis hit the country.

Furthermore, Abu Dhabi topped several rankings among some of the leading cities in the world with its response to the global pandemic crisis. This response was based on distinguished international criteria and safety standards.

The UAE emerged as a role model in harnessing the advanced infrastructure and technology to boost the efforts in developing vaccines through participation in clinical trials worldwide. The UAE further leveraged scientific research efforts and technological advancements to reiterate its position as an incubator for life sciences in the region.

He also pointed out that successful global efforts against COVID-19 facilitated the Emirate of Abu Dhabi to achieve a seat in the World Health Organisation’s Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunisation (SAGE). It is represented by Dr. Farida Al Hosani, Infectious Disease Expert and Executive Director of Infectious Diseases and Official Spokesperson for the UAE Healthcare Sector.

At the same time, Abu Dhabi introduced a robust system for storing, transporting and distributing vaccines through the Hope Consortium. The initiative has supported the distribution of 260 million vaccines to more than 60 countries around the world, helping in enhancing Abu Dhabi's position as a world-class logistics hub for pharmaceutical products and vaccines.

Al Hamed added that Abu Dhabi has a robust vaccination programme providing immunisation against various infectious diseases to all community members, including vaccinations for children, travel, Hajj and Umrah, as well as seasonal vaccinations.

"During World Immunisation Week, I urge all members of our community to benefit from the vaccination programmes to protect their health and others," he noted.
