UAE updates PCR testing, isolation rules for infected patients, close contacts

UAE authorities have been easing COVID-19 safety rules across the country in view of declining infections in recent weeks. While wearing face masks has been made optional in outdoor spaces, it is still mandatory for people to wear masks indoors.

The authorities have also eased restrictions for those around close contacts of Covid-positive cases. Reportedly, close contacts are considered among those who have interacted with a Covid-positive patient.

According to a recent announcement made by the National Emergency Crisis and Disasters Management Authority (NCEMA), close contacts are not required to quarantine themselves. However, close contacts working in all state sectors are required to conduct a PCR test daily for five days.

Every Emirate has been given the flexibility to determine the PCR testing requirement for close contacts.

Here are the protocols issued by Abu Dhabi and Dubai authorities:

Abu Dhabi

The Abu Dhabi Emergency, Crisis and Disasters Committee has also removed quarantine requirements for close contacts. However, they must undertake daily PCR testing for five consecutive days to protect themselves from infection.

Dubai

Dubai’s Supreme Committee of Crisis and Disaster Management has also eased quarantine requirements for close contacts who are not experiencing any symptoms. There is no specification related to the need to conduct PCR testing in Dubai.

In its announcement, the NCEMA has also noted that isolation protocol for residents testing positive for COVID-19 residents remains unchanged. However, they are no longer required to wear wristbands.

Meanwhile, Dubai mandates COVID-19 positive people to isolate themselves at home for 10 days. In Abu Dhabi, people must visit designated COVID-19 Prime Assessment Centers for required isolation measures and medical assessment to enhance protection against infection.
