Mediclinic City Hospital’s Breast Cancer programme receives JCI certification

The Breast Cancer unit at Mediclinic City Hospital is part of the Comprehensive Cancer Centre - Dubai’s most advanced facility for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. The expert staff at the hospital continuously work together in accordance with a multidisciplinary team approach to ensure the provision of a smooth, compassionate and effective journey for patients.

In February, the Breast Cancer unit went through a rigorous virtual certification survey. During the survey, an expert surveyor evaluated the hospital's compliance with relevant certification standards such as expertise of all physicians, nursing team and breast radiology team among others as well as self-management system for patients and their families. The surveyor also interviewed staff and patients and conducted observations as part of the process.

Reportedly, breast cancer is the number one cancer looming in the world. In the UAE alone, 38.8 percent of female cancer diagnoses are related to the breast. It means more than 1,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year.

Noting that breast cancer is largely treatable if diagnosed and treated at an early stage, experts call on people to ensure regular screening for any signs and symptoms.

The certification from Joint Commission International enhances the commitment of Mediclinic City Hospital’s Breast Cancer unit to ensure continuous quality improvement in providing safe and quality care to patients. The certification also provides numerous opportunities to the Cancer Unit to develop its outstanding breast cancer programme to improve patient care and clinical outcomes.

JCI's standards provide a critical framework to the facility for strengthening the delivery of patient-centred care, limiting risks and variations and providing a consistent support approach for every patient.

According to the Certification, Mediclinic City Hospital's programme will be mandated to:

Provide consistent care to patients including breast radiology, breast surgery, medical oncology and radiation oncology services

Employ a multidisciplinary team approach to offer a variety of advanced pathology and breast radiology support to patients for early detection as well as timely treatment

Meet standardised performance measures such as turnaround time of histopathology results, surgical site infections, chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments in accordance with the best international guidelines.

Review performance measurement data four months prior to the initial certification review visit

Speaking in this regard, Matthew Dronsfield, Hospital Director at Mediclinic City Hospital, underlined the facility's commitment to prioritising quality of care for all patients.

"This is the reason why Mediclinic City Hospital created a comprehensive breast cancer programme covering the early detection of breast cancer to dedicated follow-up of our patients following treatment,” he added.

He explained that the hospital's team follows every international treatment protocol and guideline. The setting of the Comprehensive Cancer Centre and the certified programme will enable the hospital to provide timely and high-quality care to all breast cancer patients in need.

Furthermore, Dr Annett Al Hamadi, Consultant Breast Surgeon at Mediclinic City Hospital, noted that the breast cancer unit is treating more than 100 women with breast cancer every year. With a team of specialised physicians and trained staff, the hospital is ensuring treatment in line with international guidelines with a multidisciplinary team approach, Dr Al Hamadi added.

"With the JCI accreditation, we have received positive feedback on our treatment approach, support for our cancer patients and valuable feedback for further improvement," Dr Al Hammadi noted.
