Dubai Internet City underlines UAE's COVID-19 response

Dubai Internet City and its business partners have invited visitors to its pavilion at the GITEX Technology Week 2020 to showcase how technology has supported the country amid the pandemic crisis in recent months as well as its contribution in reshaping the future of the post-pandemic world. At a time when countries were hit by the global health crisis causing unprecedented socio-economic damage, technology united the world. Technology enabled the education and business sector to ensure continuity and mitigate the repercussions. Significantly, technology became a crucial element at the frontline of the global COVID-19 fight and emerged as an instrument of innovation, growth and resilience.

GITEX Technology Week 2020 will run from December 6-10. It is significantly the biggest tech fair in the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia that will witness cutting-edge technologies from Dubai Internet City's business partners and startups at its pavilion located at Concourse 2 in Dubai World Trade Centre.

Speaking about the participation of Dubai Internet City at GITEX, Managing Director Ammar Al Malik stated that it has been a difficult year, however, the significance of technology has grown manifold. It has become a necessity that has led innovation across various sectors such as education, healthcare, energy, and manufacturing.

"In an age when resilience and revitalisation have never been so important, technology is the catalyst for Dubai’s transformation into a global hub for talent, investment and innovation," Al Malik added.

He noted that Dubai Internet City consists of the best minds in the region who are working towards boosting developing of economies and communities in the region.

"At GITEX 2020, we are excited to take visitors on a journey that blends the achievements of our business partners and startups during the COVID-19 pandemic. As industry gets moving again and technological transformation accelerates exponentially, Dubai Internet City is committed to helping businesses contribute to the UAE’s vision for a sustainable knowledge-based economy," he stated

Al Malik further expressed pride at Dubai Internet City's participation at the GITEX, adding that they look forward to showing the world how the UAE community is at the heart of the UAE's smart evolution. Dubai Internet City has been participating in the exhibition every year since 1999.

The emirate's economic growth is expected to be strengthened with the recent introduction of new golden visas for professionals specialised in innovation-based sectors such as artificial intelligence and big data. Al Malik highlighted such new innovations will also help the UAE to attract talent and investment with the aim of developing the country as a knowledge hub.

It is important to note that the business partners of the Dubai Internet City were central to the national efforts aimed at mitigating the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. At the same time, IBM provided assistance in mission-critical operations across various economic sectors in a bid to maintain business continuity and ensure rapid availability of real-time data. IBM also developed innovative solutions in its artificial intelligence laboratory and cloud factory in Dubai.

In addition, US fintech giant Visa encouraged a smooth shift towards a cashless society with its ‘Where You Shop Matters’ campaign aimed at encouraging consumers to support small businesses who were hard-hit by the pandemic.

Japan's Canon created technology that helped in remote work and distance learning as well as supported the healthcare sector.

These and other companies, that assisted the UAE's technology-inspired response to the COVID-19 pandemic, will be showcasing their innovations at the GITEX pavilion. Dubai Internet City, the emirate's largest business community for tech and talent, is scheduled to display a wide range of immersive innovations at its pavilion with its business partners Zoom, HTC Vive, Anghami. Students from the Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation and some selected startups from in5 as well as media and design entrepreneurs are also expected to showcase their innovations at the exhibition.

In addition to witnessing the showcase of in5 startups at their Dubai Internet City stand, visitors can also take a look at their own booth in Sheikh Rashid Hall, opposite Hall 7. At this hall, new and aspiring startups can explore enabling platform’s incubation programme and how its co-working spaces, 3D printers, prototyping labs, and other advanced facilities can be accessed. This development has come after startups on the enabling platform raised record-breaking investment in the first six months of 2020.

Dubai Internet City has offered a unique platform for tech firms with its state-of-the-art infrastructure, services that helps in improving the ease of doing business and the business community that consists of more than 1,600 companies from SMEs to MNCs and startups that employs more than 25,000 people across the region.
