Dubai: DHA raises awareness on kidney disease, organ donation

COVID-19 Study: Higher fever from vaccine results in more antibodies

The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) has launched an extensive educational campaign with the aim of developing community awareness on kidney diseases and expanding public understanding on the noble cause of organ donation.

Furthermore, the campaign will raise awareness about the benefits of organ donation in improving the health of patients with organ failure, and in some cases, saving their lives.

The campaign was launched was on the occasion of World Kidney Day on March 10 in collaboration with leading partners of DHA, including the Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences, Mediclinic City Hospital and Al Jalila Children’s Specialty Hospital.

Every year, the DHA marks World Kidney Day by such initiatives to raise the awareness and understanding of people on kidney diseases. DHA also informs people on the latest developments related to advanced diagnostic and treatment techniques for kidney diseases in the health sector.

Kidney transplantation

DHA's campaign is aimed at providing required information to the public on three specialised medical centres accredited for kidney transplantation in Dubai:

· Dubai Hospital

· Al Jalila Children’s Specialty Hospital

· Mediclinic City Hospital

These centres are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities including latest technologies used for kidney transplantation. In addition, they are staffed with highly-specialised doctors in nephrology, urology, transplant surgery and kidney transplantation along with professional support and top-qualified nursing personnel and technicians.

DHA noted that the operations at these hospitals are carried out in accordance with best international practices and globally recognised protocols for organ transplantation.

Voluntarily register

The campaign is encouraging people to voluntarily register their organ donation decision. As per these measures, patients with kidney failure can receive a donor. Several patients are on transplant waiting list due to lack of a matching donor from their relatives, DHA said.

Therefore, the UAE is working on furthering the development and reach of its paired kidney exchange programme.

The authority has urged all members of the community to contribute to saving lives by registering to be organ donors after their death. In this regard, the DHA stressed that one organ donor has the potential to save up to eight people’s lives.

All procedures related to organ donation and transplantation surgeries in Dubai are governed by DHA’s Supervisory Committee for Organ Transplantation.

Community members willing to donate their organs following their death are welcome to register in the Ministry of Health and Prevention’s National Programme for Donation and Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues ‘Hayat’ through a dedicated link.

The DHA is working with leading authorities across the UAE to support the programme of the Ministry of Health and Prevention and create awareness among people about the importance of organ donation to save lives of patients with organ failure.

In conclusion, DHA expressed its appreciation to the Saudi Centre for Organ Transplantation as well as Dubai Airports, Dubai Corporation for Ambulance Services, General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs - Dubai, Dubai Customs, Dubai Police, Dubai Public Prosecution, Al Jalila Foundation, Dubai Media Incorporated, Government of Dubai Media Office and Dubai’s Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department, for their continuous help and support towards the commitment to ensure success of the great huminitarian initiative.
