DoH chief celebrates women's pivotal role in UAE's journey

On the occasion of International Women's Day (IWD) on March 8, Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Hamed, Chairman of the Department of Health - Abu Dhabi (DoH), underlined the pivotal role played by women in the development and journey of the UAE. He affirmed that since the dawn of the Union, the UAE leadership has stood out as a beacon of hope for the betterment and empowerment of women in the country. Al Hamed noted that on the occasion of International Women's Day, the UAE is celebrating women across sectors and field and female students who are making their way towards future discovery and leadership.


"Today, we are celebrating the bedrock of our society, we are celebrating the mother who is the backbone of the family and the nucleus of our society. On the occasion of International Women’s Day, I hope we all join together to celebrate women everywhere," he said.


He noted that over the past 50 years, Emirati women have made continuous efforts towards the nation with glory and pride and gave unconditionally for the sake of the homeland.

"You continue to be a key component of the ambitious vision that the UAE has set for the next fifty years. We will follow in the footsteps of our wise leadership, may God protect them, to continue supporting and empowering women," he asserted.


He further congratulated Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women's Union (GWU), Chairwoman of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation (FDF), and "Mother of the Nation" for setting a true example globally in supporting women and boost their role and status within the society.


Amid the ongoing fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, Emirati women played a significant role in mitigating the health challenges. Women emerged as a core part of the UAE's first line of defence against the COVID-19 pandemic. On the occasion, Al Hamed thanked all women who contributed to safeguarding the health and safety of the members of the community.

"Today, I take this opportunity to express my most sincere respect and appreciation for your great efforts in various fields and especially in the healthcare sector," he added,


This year, the UAE celebrated International Women's Day under the theme "Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world" to honour the tremendous efforts made by women and girls around the world in shaping an equitable future and recovery from the pandemic.
