Who Commends Uae Efforts To Support Countries Affected By Covid 19

The World Health Organisation has commended the UAE’s humanitarian efforts to provide medical and protective supplies to various countries amidst the global fight against COVID-19, assisting thousands of medical and nursing staff despite the exceptional global conditions and restrictions on travel.

Dr Ahmed Al-Mandhari, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, stated that the UAE provided four flights from WHO’s regional logistics hub in Dubai, which enabled the organization and its partners to provide urgent supplies to Iran, Somalia and Ethiopia, adding the that UAE recently provided a 10 million dollar in-kind grant including PCR testing kits to make 500,000 COVID-19 tests. "This will enhance our testing capabilities in Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean as we seek to contain the infection," Al-Mandhari added.

He affirmed that the pandemic showed how public health threats could impact individuals, societies and countries, reiterating the fact that infectious diseases do not know borders and that a pandemic in any country threatens the health of the whole region. "Despite the current crisis, hope and solidarity are strengthening humanity as it fights a common enemy, with communities and countries supporting each other and taking rapid action to support more vulnerable countries," he concluded.
