Coronavirus: women's helpline set up for Covid-19 specialist support

The United Arab Emirates launched new ReachHer service, a mental health initiative for women enabling them to beat anxiety and stress during trying times of Covid-19. The UN report released in two months ago highlighted how coronavirus could cause a new global pandemic of mental health crisis, as millions living in isolation are surrounded by death, disease, poverty and anxiety.

The Gulf nation, understanding the need of the hour supported the launchof Al Manal Humanitarian Initiative ‘ReacHer’, which provided Emirati women with much needed mental health support and consultation services, especially during the Covid times.

Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed, President of the UAE Gender Balance Council, said women’s mental health is among the primary foundations for a stable and healthy society.

“This initiative will support any woman in need of guidance during this time,” she said.

“Their mental and emotional well-being is a social and economic priority that falls within the framework of the UAE’s commitment to empower all members of society.”

The lockdown, imposed to curb the spread of coronavirus, led to the rise of other challenges for women, the foremost being rise in cases of domestic violence and mental abuse. Hence, the UAE government launched nationwide hotline to let the victims contact mental health professionals anytime between 8am to 8pm.

The ones in need could reach out to ReachHer’s team of psychologists, psychiatrists, and therapists at WhatsApp number (050-4068222 ). The philanthropic project which has been operating in collaboration with with Dubai Healthcare City Authority, allowed women to interact mental health practitioners either through a telephonic call or video-conference call, depending on their requirement. Besides, the helpline where all inquiries, conversations, and interaction withpractitioners happen, respects women’s privacy and strictly follow the confidentiality clauses.

“These efforts have encompassed a wide range of humanitarian causes over the years, resulting in long-term positive impacts on the lives of its beneficiaries,” said Mona Al Marri, who heads the Dubai Women Establishment’s board of directors.

“The ‘ReacHer’ mental health chatline will serve as a platform through which women can seek advice and guidance to overcome challenges presented during the Covid-19 pandemic.”
