Abu Dhabi to launch new clinical trials to treat people with MS

Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Centre (ADSCC) is all set to begin new clinical trials with the aim of treating people with multiple sclerosis (MS). The trial has been approved by the Research Committee of the Department of Health — Abu Dhabi with the participation of 45 patients.

The study is focused on evaluating the effectiveness of a new technology called extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) in treating MS. The objective of the study is to establish immunomodulation or regulation of the body's immune system among patients.

As per reports, ECP is a cutting-edge, non-surgical procedure, used in treating complications during bone marrow and stem cell transplants. It can also be used in treating organ transplant rejection.

Speaking about the treatment, Dr Yendry Ventura, ADSCC’s General Manager, noted that the UAE is bringing unique and innovative treatments to the Middle East region through this ground-breaking clinical trial.

“Multiple sclerosis is a debilitating disease that can have a devastating impact on many patients’ lives in the Middle East and around the world and our world-leading research centre has the chance to advance global biotechnology treatments to the next level," Dr Ventura added.

The trial is being conducted after years of tireless work and commitment from the ADSCC team. Dr Ventura expressed excitement over the start of the Phase 1/2 study.

According to the specialist, the researchers will evaluate selected patients during the one-year trial.

"The study will result in life-changing remedies for people in the UAE, the Middle East and beyond," Dr Ventura added.

ECP technology has been used successfully since 1987 to fight conditions sharing similar characteristics as MS.

The trial is registered in the clinical trials public database of the US government, as recognised by the World Health Organisation.
